In 1883 Louis Kreyscher wrote to the Keck Lumberyard in White Haven to ask for some stock to have on hand while he began his own planing mill in Freeland. Twelve years later the ad for Kreyscher Bros.' Freeland Planing Mill at top left of this page ran in the 1895 city directory.

The 1888 ad for Charles Schoener indicates that he bought out his partner G. W. Kocher's interest and was now opening under his own name.

1890 ad for F. P. Maloy's building supplies (M. J. Moran, manager) from the Freeland Tribune. Another 1890 ad for G. A. Solg, plumber and steam fitter. And in 1890 this ad ran to say that C. D. Rohrbach had bought the stock of W. J. Eckert and was opening under his own name.

John M. Cunnius lived in South Heberton and so didn't show up in these early directories of Freeland, but in Bradsby's 1893 history he writes of Cunnius: proprietor of the Freeland Planing mill, builder, and contractor, and dealer in all kinds of building material, Freeland ... In 1872, he engaged in contracting and building, which he has since successfully pursued. He makes a specialty of building contracts, and constantly employs from fifteen to twenty mechanics. In 1890 he purchased the Freeland Planing mill, and has since utilized that institution to great advantage in his business.

1894 ad for Williamson's store from Carol Jones. 1893 envelope from William Williamson's hardware store has stamp commemorating the 400th anniversary of Columbus arriving in America.

This 1891 ad for Birkbeck's highlights hunting supplies and bicycles, but they were primarily a hardware store and specialized in stoves.
