Karthik Subramaniam

I am currently a Masters student at Carnegie Mellon University in the Mechanical Engineering Department. I am advised by Prof. Taylor (Microsystems and Mechanobiology Lab). My research objective is to develop a model to understand the forces on and movement of microswimmer robots when immersed in a stokes-flow fluid using LS-Dyna. Prior to grad school at CMU, I did my Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering from BITS Pilani. I am also studying Machine Learning and Additive manufacturing during my time at CMU. In my spare time, I practice indian classical music and enjoy exercising.

  1. Modelling movement of and forces on microswimmer robot using LS-Dyna.
  2. Applying Immersed Boundary Method on a micro-scale using python.

Previous Projects

Annealing Additively Manufactured Stainless steel with microwaves

  • Designed experiments on microwave heat treatment of Additively manufactured stainless steel. Secured funding from ARCI Hyderabad and BITS Pilani to carry out the experiments. - Operated the Selective Laser Melting Machine (AM) and Performed tensile and hardness tests, operated ovens and collected and analyzed tensile and hardness test data. - Reduced energy expenditure for post processing heat treatment of SS 316L by an estimated 40%, surface roughness by 23% ans porosity to 0.5%.

Finite Element Analysis of Functionally-Graded Thin-Shell Elements February 2023 -- April 2023

  • Handled Timoshenko equations to show strain-displacement relations of thin-shelled functionally-graded elements. - Developed MATLAB script for Finite Element Analysis and Finite Difference Method modelling. - Determined buckling conditions of Aluminium 2219 shell elements using Ansys as part of a team.
