Recommended Beginner Tutorial
While this might be unconventional, I would recommend doing amigurumi,
which is crochet plushies. In this case, we will make a ball. I recommend
doing amigurumi first especially a ball because it is simple and a low commitment
project. Depending on how long you are willing to spend, it can take a couple of hours, but
you will mostly spend 1-2 days compared to other projects like granny squares. Granny squares
are repetitive and often requires up to 30+ squares in order to create a sweater or a smal
blanket. In contrast, amigurumi ball is simple, less repetitive, and requires knowledge of three
stitches. Moreover, you have a fun little pin cushion for your darning needles!
Here's the tutorial I used when I first got started!
The required materials:
- Any size yarn (4mm - 6mm is good size for beginners)
- Hook (same size as yarn)
- Darning needle
- Some form of stuffing (this can be yarn scraps, anything relatively soft)
- Optional: stitch marker (you can subsitute this with a scrap yarn to mark your first stitch)
If you are struggling with the magic circle, I recommend Ami Saigon's way. They go quicker because their videos are made for beginners/intermediate, but their magic circle seems the easiest among all the tutorials I have seen.
Stitch Tutorials
After learning the ball tutorial, you can explore additional stitches!
Usually YouTube and Google are great resources!
If you are planning to do amigurumi, don't stress about learning additional
stitches right away. The ball tutorial teaches a lot of the necessary stitches
and how to read patterns. Take your time and go slowly! Don't get beginner burnout!
Here's a video covering additional stitches if needed!
My Favorite Crochet YouTubers
Once you are ready to explore, here are some of my favorite YouTubers you can follow for helpful tutorials. They do range in difficulty and not all are beginner friendly. If you are worried about the difficulty level, most of them should have videos for beginners!
