	History of Freeland, Pa. Photographers and photography services listed in directories 1882-1901
	What's on this page: Photographers and frame sellers listed in directories and maps, 1882-1901 On related pages: 20th-century photographers and camera/photo shops We owe our thanks to photographers of the past and present for the ongoing visual record that we have of life in the Freeland area. Family photos, amateur photographs, school and church and other organization photos, special events, professional portraits, photos of people, buildings, streets, landscapes ... it would be nice to know more about where these pictures came from. In the 1893 Freeland Tribune a small note in Brief Items Of News said: "A traveling photographer spread his tent in town yesterday." !!! Tell us more! But, that was it. Was this a common thing? What kind of arrangements were made between the photographer and their subjects? Were any of your old, old family photos made in this way? The photographer's name I see most frequently from Freeland in the 19th century is James J. Ward. The few samples of his work that I've seen so far show that he was experimenting with various photo formats. There was a sepia portrait photo of Daniel Kline by him offered on eBay a while ago (someone else bought it), and in 1889 a Freeland Tribune note said that Ward had completed "a handsome crayon for Mr. Dan Kline, which indicates the ability of Mr. Ward in every respect." H. Trevaskis, Hazleton photographer, was also offering crayon and watercolor portraits in addition to photographs. At present, little information has been found about our local photographers.
