Robotics and AI

How do you define AI? A way for the computer to lead to conclusions by itself based on patterns spotted by algorithms.

Can you name at least three different sub-fields of AI?

  1. Machine Learning

  2. Robotics

  3. Neural networks

AI has been around since about 70 years so far. Why is it booming right now? Currently, producing computers became easier as the cost has drastically decreased making computers widely available and used by millions. In addition cloud services have become globally popular the past recent years which allowed people all around the world to improve AI algorithms.

Can you name at least three application sectors where robots are being largely employed? What are the reasons?

  1. Health industry

    • robots are now being used in the health industry because in some cases they are more accurate than humans (i. e. operations) and consitstent (i. e. CPR).

  2. Dangerous jobs

    • Some jobs can result in the loss of human death. To avoid that, robots are sacrificed instead. For example, exploringa volcano would be very dangerous for a human, and the risk and set of skills required could be very costly.

  3. space exploration

    • robots can be specifically designed to go to space instead of sacrificing humans and staying in space for longers to collect information.

Can you identify three major challenges for a wheeled autonomous robot performing a 24h surveillance task in a large facility? (e.g., something like Mall of Qatar)

  1. It is challenging for robots to address some events that need instant attention (i.e. a robbery)

  2. Sensors may not be accurate in special cases resulting in false conclusions.

  3. It is challenging for robots to know if an event occurred and communicate efficiently
