Campus Funding Sources

The Student Body Vice-President for Finance encourages students and student organizations to request funding and assistance for their events and programming from any of the following sources. When making a request to these funding sources, please make sure to tailor your funding request to the demands, requirements, and goals of each funding body. Visit their home website or contact the leadership of each funding body to find out their requirements before submitting an official request. Student Government

Student Senate

Student Senate is the legislative body of Student Government that represents the interests of undergraduate students. Student Senate funds an assortment of social activities, events, and projects that benefit and is generally open to the entire campus community. Senate has funded campus-wide social events, barbeques, formal dances, social banquets, off-campus trips, off-campus socials, film and art exhibits, discussion panels, and speakers. Student Senate has also funded purchases for new equipment for sports teams or student groups that need new technology. Student Senate does not fund events that are political, charitable, or will serve alcohol.

Student Dormitory Council

Student Dormitory Council is a student government body of the residence hall population. They represent the interests of all on-campus residents and work with Housing, Dining, and Student Life to enhance the quality of campus life. SDC only fund events that benefit students who live in residential dorms.

Activities Board

The Activities Board (AB) is a primary student-run organization formed by Student Senate that provides a variety of event programming for the campus community. Any student can join a committee of Activities Board just by showing interest. AB is open to suggestions from student organizations and to those who show interest in bringing events to campus. They host and fund lectures, political and special-interest speakers, film festivals, talent shows, concerts, comedians, and other campus-wide special events. AB Tech provides student government-subsidized IT assistance for student organizations

    Graduate Student Assembly

    The Graduate Student Assembly (GSA) is the legislative body of Student Government that represents the interests of graduate students.

    GSA Special Allocation

    GSA funds events, programs, and projects that benefit graduate students. GSA does not fund political, religious, or academic events.

    Conference Funding

    GSA and the Graduate Programs Office offer funding for individual graduate students interested in attending or presenting at conferences.

    Small Project Grants

    The Graduate Programs Office offers grants of $500, called GuSH Grants, that are avaiable to cover project costs incurred for thesis and dissertation work. Ford grants up to $1500 for automotive or environmentally-related research.

    Division of Student Affairs

    Office of Student Activities

    The Office of Student Activities is a division of Student Affairs that provides resources, support, leadership development, and ad hoc advising to all student organizations. Student Activities provides funding and resources for two types of special event programming which they help coordinate, which are UC Late Night and UC Friday Events. They typically provide up to $400 per event.

    UC Late Night Events are events hosted within the University Center that happen between 9 PM to 1 a.m. on Friday or Saturday nights.

    UC Fridays are events hosted each Friday during 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM within Kirr Commons, University Center.

    Office of Multicultural Affairs

    The Office of Multicultural Affairs is the division of student affairs that coordinates program initiatives that contribute towards Carnegie Mellon's commitment to diversity and multiculturalism. Emily Half, Coordinator of Student Development, heads this office and provides some funding for events and programs that promote multiculturalism and diversity.

    Office of International Education

    The Office of International Education at Carnegie Mellon University is committed to supporting, promoting, and celebrating individuals in an intercultural environment. The Office of International Education (OIE) provides funding for events that allow participants to learn about international issues and cultures.

    Career Center

    The career center provides a comprehensive range of services, programs, and materials focusing on career exploration & decision making, skill development, experiential learning, and career placement. The Career Center provides some partial funding for events that nurture and promote professional and philanthrophic development among students. Paul Fowler, Director and Associate Dean of Student Affairs, heads this office.

    Office of Student Development

    The Office of Student Development coordinates services, programs, and experiences designed to encourage discovery, relfection and self-awareness across a broad spectrum of metacurricular arena. The department organizes its energies around areas such as as community service opportunities, leadership development, and experiential education programs, intellectual and artistic development opportunies, gender programs, and resources, resources related to GLBT issues, residential governance, and residential/house-based experiences and support mechanisms.     Fifth Year Scholars Program

    The Fifth Year Scholars Program provides an opportunity for a small group of students to remain at Carnegie Mellon for an additional academic year to purseu coursework outside of the core four year curriculum and to implement a campus impact project. Scholars are selected based on previous academic and etracurricular engagement along with the personal and campus impact of their proposed project. Scholars are awarded free tuition along a $7,000 scholarship grant. Previous Fifth Year programs have included Summit, a 3-day conference where students participate in several educational and extracurricular workshops, Alternative Break, a week-long community service trip, and the installation of art in Margaret Morrison Carnegie Hall.

    Office of Community Service

    The Office of Community Serivce encourages student interest in community service and service learning opportunities, encouraging them to be self-motivated and to get involved in the community. The Office of Community Service provides funds and services primarily for community service in local area and on occassion to other communities throughout the United States. Past events they have funded include Habitat for Humanity and Carnegie Mellon Aid Relief Education (CARE) Program.

    Office of Student Life

    The Office of Student Life work to enhance the residential experience and advise leadership within the Greek community. They will generally fund leadership programs, programs for those in special-interest housing, and Greek events.

    Dean of Student Affairs

    The Office of the Dean of Student Affairs provides central guidance and direction of student services at Carnegie Mellon University. Dean Church will occassionally provide funding for large events that benefit a significantly large segment of the community and conform to one of the grand goals of Carnegie Mellon University (recruitment, diversity, university advancement, etc). Dean Church should typically be the last resort on a list of funding contacts.

    Academic and Administrative Departments

    Undergraduate Research Office

    The Undergraduate Research Office awards grants to undergraduates who undergo research through carrying out scholarly or artistic activities that leads to the production of new knowledge.

    Academic Departments and Vice Provost of Education

    Various academic departments (such as College of Fine Arts, Department of English, Heinz School, Tepper, and Carnegie Institute of Technology) have funded student-driven programs and activities, including film festivals, film productions, student magazines, community service projects, fashion shows, professional events, and business competitions. Various academic departments have their own protocol and requirements for processing funding request from students and student organizations. The Vice Provost of Education Indira Nair on occassion may provide start-up funding for educational programs.

    Enrollment Service

    Enrollment Services may provide funding for events and programs that are shown to assist recruitment efforts (i.e. campus events held on Tartan Sleeping Bag Weekends).

    Off-campus Funding

    If your event or program will have a significant attendance from students of University of Pittsburgh, it is strongly encouraged that your organization requests funding from departments, student government bodies, or student organizations from University of Pittsburgh. It is recommended that you contact a peer or sister student organization at University of Pittsburgh and request that they contact the appropriate funding bodies at their institution.
