How do you define AI?
Artificial Intelligence is the simulation of human intelligence in machines to enable them to carry out complex tasks.
Can you name at least three different sub-fields of AI?
Machine learning, Deep learning, and Robotics.
AI has been around since about 70 years so far. Why is it booming right now?
One reason that AI is booming right now is because of technological improvements, particularly
in data storage and computer power that enables more powerful AI to be created. Another reason
is the need for complex algorithms that can solve complex problems such as object recognition,
where AI is the best option to solve it.
Can you name at least three application sectors where robots are being largely employed? What are the reasons?
The use of robots in warehouse management is increasing for many reasons. They can work 24/7,
they are much more efficient as they don’t need to take breaks, they don’t get tired and if
the programming is correct, they don’t make mistakes.
Robots are also used in factory manufacturing for the same reasons that they are used in
warehouse management.
Finally, robots are also starting to get used in agriculture in the form of self-guided
tractors and harvesters.
Can you identify three major challenges for a wheeled autonomous robot performing a 24h surveillance task in a large facility? (e.g., something like Mall of Qatar)
One challenge would be figuring out how to recharge the robot; since it performs 24h surveillance,
it can’t take breaks to be recharged. Another challenge would be mapping out the path it will
take to surveil every part of the facility most efficiently. Yet another would be making the
algorithm it will use to recognize things such as dangerous objects that would be of concern
regarding security.
