History of Freeland, Pa.
A&P fire of 1974

Charlie Gallagher shares six photos (off-site) of the A&P grocery store fire of 1974. A terrifyingly ferocious fire. He received the photos from Joe Falatko, copies of Standard Speaker photos. Thank you to Charlie and to Joe Falatko and the Standard Speaker.

The A&P store had been a mainstay of Freeland for a long time, one of two supermarkets in the center of town, the other being Genetti's a block and a half away. Before that, the building was Krell's Hall and the Yannes Opera House (see page on Opera houses). In recent years this site at the corner of Front and Washington Streets was later occupied by the Convenience Mart.
