The 6152 combines an IBM PS/2 Model 60 processor with a 32-bit RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computing) processor that is similar to the IBM RT PC processor, together with a Motorola MC68881 floating point processor. The primary operating system for the 6152 Academic System is the IBM Academic Operating System 4.3 (hereafter referred to as IBM/4.3) which is limited to colleges and universities eligible for the IBM educational allowance. The IBM/4.3 operating system is derived from the 4.3 Berkeley Software Distribution (4.3BSD) version of a UNIX* operating system. The X Window System, version 11 is provided as an integral part of IBM/4.3. The X Window System is a network-transparent windowing system that provides a base for the operation of application programs. Both IBM Token-Ring and Ethernet** local area networks are supported on the 6152. The 6152 is also supported by the DOS 3.3 and OS/2 Standard 1.0 operating systems. When operating under DOS 3.3 or OS/2 Standard 1.0 the 6152 does not use the RISC processor or RISC RAM storage. * UNIX is a registered trademark of AT&T Bell Laboratories. ** Ethernet is a registered trademark of the Xerox Corporation. MODELS MODEL 022 20Mb Fixed Disk, 2Mb RISC RAM MODEL 024 20Mb Fixed Disk, 4Mb RISC RAM MODEL 044 44Mb Fixed Disk, 4Mb RISC RAM MODEL 048 44Mb Fixed Disk, 8Mb RISC RAM MODEL 074 70Mb Fixed Disk, 4Mb RISC RAM MODEL 078 70Mb Fixed Disk, 8Mb RISC RAM LIMITATIONS When running the X Window System or the IBM Andrew File System (PRPQ 5799-CRH) at least 4Mb of RISC memory is required. The smaller 6152 Model 022 with 2Mb of RISC memory will support the development of UNIX applications that do not include these software components. MACHINE REQUIREMENTS Network Server: The IBM RT Personal Computer (RT PC) 6151 Model 015 or 115, or the 6150 Model 025 or 125, with a minimum of 240Mb fixed disk for program storage, provides network server support to the 6152. Appropriate additional storage for user work areas is dependent on various factors such as the number of users, the number of work stations and the workloads in the network cluster. 240Mb of fixed disk storage can be provided on the above RT PC models with a 70Mb hard disk, and a SCSI adapter (#7000) and associated 200Mb disk (see Product Announcement 186-174). A Communication Adapter (see below) provides communication between the 6152 and the IBM RT PC network server. OPTIONAL FEATURES: FIXED DISKS: o 44Mb fixed disk (#3046) (P/N 6450354): One 44Mb fixed disk can be installed as a second disk on Models 044 and 048. #3046 can replace one or two 20Mb disks on Models 022 and 024. Both fixed disks on a 6152 must be the same size. o 70Mb fixed disk (#3051) (P/N 6450355): One 70Mb fixed disk can be installed as a second disk on Models 074 and 078. #3051 can replace one or two 20Mb or 44Mb disks on Models 022, 024, 044 and 048. Both fixed disks on a 6152 must be the same size. Two fixed disks on a 6152 must be of the same size. When replacing the 20Mb or 44Mb hard disk with a 70Mb (#3051) hard disk, the ESDI Fixed Disk Attachment (Part Number 15F6865) is required. This part can be ordered by the customer from the Parts Order Center (POC) in Boulder, CO., at (303) 924-4100. COMMUNICATION ADAPTERS (At least one adapter is required.) o IBM Token-Ring Network Adapter (#4790) o Ungermann-Bass NICps/2 Adapter 1542 (#8000) for use with Ethernet The IBM Token-Ring Adapter and the Ungermann-Bass NICps/2 Adapter 1542, together with router code running under the IBM 4.3 Operating System, allow the interconnection of two local area networks, Token-Ring or Ethernet, using the TCP/IP protocol. DISPLAYS AND ADAPTERS: o 8503 Monochrome Display (12-inch) (8503-001) o 8513 Color Display (12-inch) (8513-001) o 8514 Color Display (16-inch) (8514-001) o 8514/A Display Adapter (#4054) (P/N 1887972) o 8604 Monochrome Display (15-inch) (8604-001) o IBM PS/2 Memory Expansion Kit for Enhanced Color (#4081) OTHER FEATURES OF PS/2 MODEL 60 All features and accessories announced for the Personal System/2 Model 60 that are supported by DOS 3.3 or OS/2 Standard 1.0 are supported when the 6152 Academic System operates under DOS 3.3 or OS/2 Standard 1.0.
