CITYWATCH (2000)
A set of 9 computer prints on theme of surveillance made for display on CCTV camera columns in Birmingham

For the 'as it is' exhibition at the IKON gallery in Birmingham in the year 2000, 24 artists were invited to make work in response to some aspect of the city of Birmingham. On trips to Birmingham I had been fascinated by the tall thin chrome posts in the city center, which supported CCTV cameras. I mapped all the CCTV cameras within the city center. Using the posts as a reference point and a motif, I made computer prints commenting on this surveillance system in the heart of Birmingham city center. For the authorities the cameras offer reassurance, whist for members of the public their presence is a sinister invasion of privacy. The posts contained empty frames intended for advertising and public announcement posters. I used the frames to present the prints in public as well as displaying them in the concurrent gallery exhibition.
