Welcome to My Site

Welcome! You have reached Wenhao Diao's personal webpage. My Chinese given name is 文豪, which means an oustanding writer. It is a humbling name, and I try to live up to it with a passion for language and linguistics.
About Me

I am a doctoral candidate in the Department of Modern Languages at Carnegie Mellon University. I received my B.A. and M.A. from East China Normal University in Shanghai, China.

As an applied linguist, I am interested in the intersection of language and culture with a focus on Chinese.  Specifically my research involves two areas that are inter-related: 1) exploring overseas sojourners’ language socialization processes, and 2) using discourse analysis to examine how identities are constructed through language in contemporary China.

I have taught Chinese language and culture courses in a variety of settings across different levels, including Carnegie Mellon, Middlebury's Language Schools, the University of Virginia, and East China Normal University.

Aside from research and teaching, I also like painting, running, reading, and writing.
