EMS 1 Assignment 5: Audio Soundpiece
October '08
For this assignment, we were to select a literary work of fiction and use Audacity to create a sound piece that depicts a scene from the literary work. For my soundpiece, I generated the opening scene from William Faulkner's novel, As I Lay Dying, where two brothers are walking through an open field to the sounds of nature and their eldest brother building a coffin for their mother.
Text: Not taking a single paragraph in particular, the soundpiece is based on the first section of the novel narrarated by the main character Darl (pages 1-23). I wanted to focus more on simulating the surrounding environment and the sounds of the coffin being constructed primarily.

Sounds Used and Generated:
Wind - I generated wind through my voice by whitstling and blowing into the microphone. The hissing/white noise of the microphone also plays a role in setting the quiet atmosphere of the piece.
Walking 1 and Walking 2- There are two separate audio tracks for the walking. To generate the sounds of walking, I stepped on broken cerial boxes and candy wrappers to give a proper ground effect of walking through a field.
Sawing - For the sawing, I took an exacto knife and scraped it against a cardboard box
Hammering - To generate the sound of hammering, I struck an exacto knife against the ground.
Geese/Birds - The sounds of the birds were created vocally.
