Computational Biology

  • What is a genome/DNA and why is it important to know?

    • "one haploid set of chromosomes with the genes they contain the genetic material of an organism" - Merriam webster

  • Does CS have a significant role to play in studying why we are tall, organized, athletic, or healthy?

    • yes, we can easily collect data using DNA microarrays, and microscopes for example.

  • What are some of the important questions in biology and medicine that can be addressed with computer science?

    • neuroscience and bio-medical engineering: response of TMS on the brain which helps develop treatments for brain diseases.

    • "how the genes of a sliced-up flatworm conduct its symphony of cells when they regenerate into new organisms." --> A 120-year-old problem that a computer program created by Levin and Lobo solved by trying out different theories by randomly guessing.

  • Is it enough to study humans and the human genome?

    • No, we need to study genomes of other creatures

  • Is the industry interested in computational biology, or is it largely academic research?

    • As technology is advancing, the industry is getting more interested in Computational Biology. As for the status quo, it is largely academic research
