General Electric
The Company
From the early days of self-contained electric-traction-powered locomotives, GE had a hand in things. In 1940, GE partnered with Alco, a deal which lasted until 1953. At that point GE struck out on their own and began developing a line of locomotives; Alco continued using GE electrical equipment in their units. GE passed Alco as number two in terms of production within a few years, and beyond the Pennsy era became number one, beating out EMD in terms of production.
