*Pennsy Power II states that units 9472A-9477A, 9472B, 9474B and
9476B, all part of order LD35 were built as class "FF3" but
reclassified as FP20a and modified to the standard Fairbanks
Morse passenger gearing of 64:23 giving them a continous T.E. of
27,400 lbs. at 23 mph with a top speed of 100 mph. The modified
Erie-Builts weighed 27,000 lbs heavier than the stock units. The
A units weighed 341,880 lbs with 236,200 on the drivers, 59,050
per powered axles. The regeared B units weighed 334,880 lbs. with
232,600 on the drivers, 58,150 lbs on each powered axles.
These figures differ slightly with FM'standard passenger
configuration of a 63:24 gearing giving the unit a continous T.E.
of 27,500 lbs at 24 mph with smaller, 40" inch, wheels. The
units' larger 42" wheels may be responsible to the slight
variation in performance. While the weigh changed, PPII is mute
as to the reason. There is no indication if a steam generator and
water tanks were added to any of these nine units. All eventually
were restored to the stock FF20 configuration.
#PPII states A-B-A lashup, 9478A, 9478B and 9479A, built as
one of order LD 35's class "FF3," was reclassified as FP20 with
the same regearing but with adifference in ballasting. These A
units were 10,000 lbs. lighter than the other six regeared "A"
Erie-Builts. The B units were 2,000 lbs lighter than the other

three modified B units. PPII states 9478A and 9478A weighed
331,000 lbs with 230,800 on the drivers. 57,700 per powered axle,
while 9478B weighed 332,800 lbs with 232,100 on the drivers,
58,025 lbs on each powered axle.
Like the nine FP20as these three FP20s were restored to the
original as-delivered FF20 freight configuration.
