Electro-Motive Division of General Motors/Electro-Motive Corporation
The Company
Eletro-Motive Corporation got their start as a builder of gas-electric units, later moving to diesel-electric power. They purchased Winton, their diesel supplier, early on. They became the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors, and quickly became the leading producer of diesel locomotives. During World War 2 they were at an advantage with their established line of road units, which they produced through the conflict. They continued as the number one diesel builder through the Pennsy era, and only recently have been equalled by latecomer General Electric.
