Cartographic, geographic, geological and geodesic related information
I guess it's the latent Civil Engineer in me, but I've always had an interest in map, mapping systems, and the information available this way. Lately I've started playing with some tools.
-
Mayko mXmap
-
mxmap is a map viewer application for UNIX systems. It also allows annotations, routing, and gps tracking, with the use of gpsd.
-
DLGV32
-
A map viewer for you weasels using a Microsoft operating system.
-
gpsd
-
gpsd is a helper daemon which does some NMEA decoding and can also relay NMEA via a TCP connection. You can also connect a gpsd to another gpsd. As of 0.99 it supports the Delorme Earthmate GPS receiver, which speaking only Rockwell Zodiac binary protocol and not NMEA, and will translate that to NMEA for other applications. gpsd comes with a simple client which shows a view of the sky including what satellites can be seen, what satellites cannot be seen but whose locations are known, and if a solution is available which satellites were used to calculate it. It also includes a simple speedometer application.
-
KA9MVA hacks the Earthmate!
-
Well, good for him, you say... He has some useful information about the Zodiac protocol, including the PDF file from Rockwell which describes it, and some information about the pin-out, which is useful if, say, you wish to build a power cable for it.
-
Gpstrans
-
gpstrans is a set of utilities for use with a Garmin GPS receiver; They allow it to communicate with the aforementioned mXmap, including transferring routes between the two. More importantly, it contains some useful code taken from MacGPS for doing UTM to Degrees/Minutes/Seconds conversion (and vice-versa).
-
SA Watch
-
SA Watch is a program for win32 which monitors Selective Availability. The information included on Selective Availability is also useful.
-
GeoTIFF files
-
A GeoTIFF is a TIFF with certain additional tags containing georeferencing information for the TIFF file, generally such that it can be tied to a coordinate space. A supplemental library, libgeotiff provides functionality when used with libtiff to get at this information. It can be built with support for the PROJ.4 projection library to get accurate coordinate projections/
-
PROJ.4 projection library
-
This library provides many cartographic projections, and can be used with libgeotiff.
-
PASDA
-
PASDA, Pennsylvania Spacial Data Access, has DRGs of 7.5' USGS quads covering the entire state available for ftp. They also have DOQQ (aerial photo quadrangle quadrants), DEM and (I think) DLG data covering the state.
-
Free DRGs (take 1)
-
The USGS has a pointer to freely downloadable DRG maps online. You can buy the maps from the USGS, but they're then freely redistributable.
-
Free DRGs (take 2)
-
And even more
-
Free DRGs (take 3)
-
And here's someone else's pointers to freely available DRG maps.
-
Mapserver
-
Mapserver is a way of delivering maps via the web. It is a CGI application.
