The primary purpose of this project is to explore the communication ability of the LEGO Mindstorms RCX. Most programming languages available for the RCX have the functionality for sending single-byte messages between RCX units, but no one seems to have gone to the trouble of documenting this. The goal of this project is to produce some of that missing documentation. Questions being investigated include:

• How robust is the IR communication? That is, how far apart can the units be? At what angles? In what lighting?
• How can the communication be improved? What would be considered an improvement? How can it be implemented?

This is a summer research project, funded by Carnegie Mellon's Undergraduate Research Initiative (see note below).
