Hurricanes

I never thought that I would need to worry about what to do in case of a hurricane.  I mean my parents always provided me with the protection that I needed.  Now being alone at school, I do not have the protection of my parents which got me to thinking:  What would I do if there was a hurricane or some other catastrophic event? How do I keep myself safe?

I would like to share some of the helpful tips that I have come across to anyone reading my page.  Maybe this will help save your life or someone else who needs to know.  Also, check out this short video on hurricane preparedness:

Having an emergency kit is something that everyone should have.  I purchased a plastic storage bin that slides underneath my bed.  Inside I have a first aid kit, a battery powered radio, flashlight, waterproof matches, candles, bottles of water, energy bars, and emergency cash.  Just knowing that these items are in one place that I can easily obtain is a great source of comfort.

If you know that a hurricane watch has been called the best thing to do is to get home as soon as possible.  Since hurricanes bring harsh winds and torrential rains, tying down outside furniture and items is most important.  Having these items blow around can cause serious damage to your home and those inside.  Purchasing items like an outdoor furniture cover can protect your belongings as well as keeping them secure.  Brookstone.com offers great choices for all kinds of items.

Knowing what to do in the face of an emergency can make the difference between life and death.  Practicing your family’s emergency procedures can help in the outcome that you do in fact need to arise to the occasion.  Check out the following links for tips and advice on hurricanes:

Being away at school is an exciting time, but it also is a time when we are on our own.  That means we need to be able to help ourselves out in times of need.  I hope that you found this hurricane preparation page very helpful.
