program notes: Galbraith's first violin concerto was composed for the young California phenom Alyssa Wang. Although a recent graduate from the Carnegie Mellon University School of Music, Ms Wang has concertized throughout the United States and Europe and has served as concertmaster for the Berkeley Youth Orchestra, San Francisco Youth Symphony, and Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic. Galbraith and Wang became acquainted at the school, where Ms Wang performed several of the composer's works, including the world premiere of Dancing Through Time, which she recorded as first chair with the Carnegie Mellon Contemporary Ensemble.
composer's notes: Violin Concerto Nº 1 was composed for Alyssa Wang, and celebrates her tremendous virtuosity, her deep musical sensitivity, and her fiery artistic temperament. These elements are most prominently displayed in the lively outer movements that present a colorful, dynamic collaboration between soloist and orchestra. The middle movement, titled Eggshell White Night, is an ethereal, loving tribute to my very dear friend Pastor George Mendis, who died suddenly and quite unexpectedly in October 2016. I am most fortunate to have this premiere performed by Ms Wang, the extraordinary musicians of the Carnegie Mellon Contemporary Ensemble, and by one of this country's most talented and delightful young conductors, Daniel Nesta Curtis. —Nancy Galbraith
