| program notes: | "Celebration of Color and Light" was composed for a joint commission from the Butler County Symphony for its 40th Anniversary season, the McKeesport Symphony for its 30th Anniversary season, and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. | |
| an analysis: | "Celebration of Color and Light" is an exercise in exploring the vast array of colors in the orchestral pallet, as its title might suggest. The form of the work is basically A-B-A (fast-slow-fast). The fast sections are bright, energetic, and rhythmical, while the contrasting slow section becomes somewhat ethereal. It concludes with a muted trumpet solo that evolves into a trumpet duet. The music is not tonal in the traditional sense of having a key, but it uses definite tonal centers throughout the work.
