program notes: | "Blue Capriccio" is true to the definition of that musical form—virtuosic, free and lively, playful and whimsical—with 'blue' perhaps referencing a bright azure sky, rather than a deep saddness. The music opens energetically and rhythmically with delightful flourishing exchanges among the four, featuring percussive pizzicato's that reappear throughout the music. After a while the music gradually cools down, as the players continue to dance around each other in their own raptured orbits, then occasionally reunite in colorful four-part collaborations. The work concludes with a surprise abrupt ending. The PANdemonium4, who commissioned the work, rise to the occasion with virtuosity and passion in numerous recent performances, including a premiere in 2023. |
