(a) These masks are vertical edge detectors.

(b) Small mask sharpens the image while a large mask blurs it.

(c) If we wanted to identify the horizon in images at sea, you would use a horizontal edge detector. You can do this by transposing the vertical edge detector mask before performing convolution.
