Big Data refers to sets of data that are very large (volume), received at very high speed (velocity)
and include different types of data (variety). Big Data is so large and complex that traditional
data-processing software cannot deal with it.
Cloud computing is the ability to access computing services and resources on-demand through the web.
These services are hosted at the vendor’s data center, which eliminates the need for active
management on the user’s side.
There is a collection of technologies that make cloud computing possible. The main one is
virtualization, which allows a powerful computer like the servers in data centers split up into
smaller ones which can be accessed by users remotely. Another technology that cloud computing relies
on is the internet, which allows the connection between the user and hosting server to happen in the
first place.
The 3 major cloud computing service models are IaaS (infrastructure as a service), PaaS (platform as
a service) and SaaS (software as a service).
IaaS provides access to the computing infrastructure (servers, storage and networking) so that
the customer can use it as they use on-premise hardware, with the only difference being that the
hardware is actually located at the data center of the hosting company. PaaS offers all the features
that IaaS offer with an added platform that supports developing, running and maintaining software.
SaaS includes what IaaS and PaaS offer with added ready-to-use software.3
1. Data stored on local servers can be destroyed in the case of natural disasters or power failure,
having your systems and data in the cloud ensures that they are always backed up and safe.
2. Companies purchase very expensive equipment and upgrades for managing and maintaining their
local systems, cloud computing can cut down on these costs significantly.
3. Local systems need the IT staff to present physically in order to be able to manage them,
cloud computing allows them to run and maintain systems remotely.
The business model of cloud computing is an on-demand pay-as-you-go model, which saves a lot of
money for both the hosting provider and the customer.
