What is cloud computing?
Cloud computing is the delivery of computing (which may include: storage, data processing, networks, and software) over the internet.
This means that clients can rent access to resources without the need of owning and maintaining physical servers.
This may be cost-efficient and more scalable, making it easier for businesses to run their operations.
Is cloud computing a new technology per se? In other words, what are the unique technology features of cloud computing, if any?
It is not technically a new technology as it is an evolution of current technology, such as distributed computing.
However, there are newer features, such as the ability to buy resources on-demand and the increasing affordability,
allowing more people to access these resources.
What are the three major cloud service models?
The 3 models are:
- Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS): For example, Amazon Web Services (AWS) provides virtual resources like servers.
- Platform as a Service (PaaS): Offers a platform that allows developers to build and test their apps.
- Software as a Service (SaaS): Provides functional software over the internet via a browser without the need for installation. This includes Office 365 and Google Workspace.
Name at least 3 real-world domains where the application of cloud computing was (or can be) very enabling and effective.
- Healthcare: Patient data can be stored on the cloud, and large amounts of data can be processed, potentially using AI.
- Finance: The cloud can be used to process massive transactions, run risk assessments, and support online banking.
- Education: Services like Google Workspace, through tools like Google Classroom, can provide resources to people all over the world.
What is the economic/business model of cloud computing?
The model is pay-as-you-go (subscription). This means businesses rent servers and pay for only what they use.
This makes cloud computing affordable for businesses of all sizes.
