• How do you define AI?
Artificial Intelligence, in short AI, refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines, using patterns and features in data.
• Can you name at least three different sub-fields of AI?
Machine Learning, Robotics, Neural Networks
• AI has been around since about 70 years so far. Why is it booming right now?
Principles stayed the same, but computation power is now highly available at little to no costs, while tremendous advancements have been made in areas such as big-data, memory optimisation, cloud computing etc.
• Can you name at least three application sectors where robots are being largely employed? What are the reasons?
Health Care, Industrial Manufacturing and Constructions. Main reasons include the speed, accuracy and power of robots.
• Can you identify three major challenges for a wheeled autonomous robot performing a 24h surveillance task in a large facility? (e.g., something like Mall of Qatar)
Challenges include: Privacy and Security (we don't want information to be hacked from outside the facility the same way we dont want others to use the robot in any unintended way), Control (we want to make sure the robot doesn't collide with anything and does not interfere with humans in any negative way), Lack of Power (there have been cases in which thefts were possible due to lack of electricity in the security systems; how do we charge a robot that is 24 hours at work? what if it loses power or it malfunctions? these are all very hard challenges).
