Robotics & AI

How do you define AI?

Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is defined as the intelligence shown by machines. As a branch of Computer Science, it deals with creating intelligent machines that perform tasks that generally require natural intelligence, that is, human thinking.

Popular subfields of AI

  • Machine Learning
  • Robotics
  • Natural Language Programming

Why is AI booming right now, 70 years after its conception?

With the exponential growth of data and information in the recent years, it is becoming extremely time-consuming for humans to think of solutions to high level problems on their own. As the proper infrastructure for the sustainability of AI has been developed in the past decade, and is being further improved upon, there is an explosive interest in the field of AI right now.

Sectors where robots are being largely employed

  • Automotives
  • Inventory Sorting
  • Electronics Manufacturing

In these sectors, implementation of AI massively cuts down on cost and human workload. It also saves time, so se can see a visible effect of AI effeciency.

Major challenges for a wheeled autonomous robot

Consider a wheeled autonomous robot built for surveillance of the entire Mall of Qatar. There’s many issues which arise from it.

  • The area needed to cover by the robot is too large to survey effectively.
  • The robot needs a huge amount of storage to store data. Similar to CCTV cameras, if someone wanted to view the last 24 hours of surveillance, the robot would need to store hundreds of gigabytes of data.
  • There is also a non-negligible possibility of the robot facing damage due to human interruptions.
