Prof. Gianni's Research — Update 7

Overview

Prof. Gianni will be our speaker next week. Below are my prepared research questions on AI and robotics, along with my answers and the sources I used.

Research Questions

1. How do you define AI?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science that creates machines and software that can perform tasks that usually require human intelligence, such as learning, problem-solving, reasoning, and decision-making.

2. Can you name at least three different sub-fields of AI?

Three main sub-fields of AI are machine learning, natural language processing, and computer vision. Machine learning allows computers to learn from data, natural language processing helps computers understand human language, and computer vision helps computers understand images and videos.

3. AI has been around for about 70 years. Why is it booming right now?

AI is booming now because we have much more powerful computers, huge amounts of data, and better AI technologies. These improvements allow AI systems to learn faster and perform tasks much better than they could in the past.

4. Can you name at least three application sectors where robots are being widely employed? What are the reasons?

Robots are widely used in manufacturing, healthcare, and logistics. They are used because they can perform tasks faster, more safely, and more accurately than humans in many situations.

5. Can you identify three major challenges for a wheeled autonomous robot performing a 24h surveillance task in a large facility?

A major challenge is battery power, because the robot needs to work for 24 hours and must return to a charging station when its battery is low. Another challenge is people and obstacles, since shoppers, workers, or objects can suddenly block its path. Finally, indoor navigation is difficult because GPS does not work well indoors, so the robot must use cameras and sensors to know where it is.
