My name is Matt Dailey. I am a senior pursuing a dual degree in Physics and Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University.

The animation is a 2D N-body simulation with 100 particles. If it appears jerky, I recommend opening it in Google Chrome. I find that Chrome is much better at rendering canvas animations than Firefox.
