  Biography        
             
 
 

Dr. Kan Shao is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the National Center for Environmental Assessment (NCEA) at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA), Research Triangle Park (RTP). Advised by Professor Mitchell J. Small, He received a dual-PhD degree in May 2011 from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) and the Department of Engineering and Public Policy (EPP) at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). Due to his strong interests in statistical and computational analysis, he joined Machine Learning Department (ML) in Spring 2010 working with Professor Daniel B. Neill in the H. John Heinz III College and got a secondary Masters degree in Machine Learning in May 2011. His current research at the U.S. EPA is focused on developing novel approaches to advance dose-response analysis and risk assessment to support U.S. EPA's Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) and Human Health Risk Assessment (HHRA) program. His published works investigated various critical issues in benchmark dose (BMD) estimation. He presently serves as the Vice Chair for the Dose-Response Specialty Group at the Society for Risk Analysis.

 
  He was born in the city of Shanghai, and grew up in the city of Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province, China. He obtained a Bachelors of Engineering in Environmental Engineering with a minor certification in Business Administration from the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) in June 2006. In May 2007, He received an Master of Science degree in Civil and Enviromental Engineering from CMU. He got married in 2007 and has two children.
