ABOUT ME

Hi! My name is Kyri (pronounced Kai-Ree). I am a PhD candidate at Carnegie Mellon University (expected graduation : December 2014). I am originally from Boise, Idaho, but now reside in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I enjoy anything that harnesses the power of creativity; be it in engineering or technical applications or musical and artistic applications.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or comments.

ENGINEERING

I am currently a PhD candidate at Carnegie Mellon University studying Electrical and Computer Engineering. I also went to CMU for my undergraduate and masters degrees, also in ECE. Among others, I have worked at companies such as Hewlett-Packard, Xerox, and Intel Research.

The goal of my research is to integrate renewable energy sources (i.e., wind and solar) efficiently into the electric power grid. There are multiple goals that I hope to achieve, particularly:

1) Integrating intermittent sources into the grid by coordinating the renewable sources with traditional energy sources and storage devices
2) Finding an efficient way of coordinating different control areas when the communication between areas is limited
3) Determining how much storage, backup generation capacity, and load flexibility is required to effectively integrate these intermittent sources

Conference Publications:
K. Baker, G. Hug, and X. Li, "Optimal integration of intermittent energy sources using distributed multi-step optimization," Power and Energy Society General Meeting, 2012 IEEE, July 2012.

I love MATLAB! I especially love creating GUIs (Graphical User Interfaces) that allow for better visualization of research results.

ARTISTIC

Music

I am a guitarist and songwriter. Playing and listening to music are some of the most fulfilling and amazing things I have ever experienced in my life.

I enjoy all forms of music; particularly rock and metal.

Some of my favorite artists include Slipknot, The Cranberries, The Smashing Pumpkins, Jewel, Incubus, Weezer, Korn, In Flames, Chris Isaak, The Beatles, Britney Spears, Fear Factory, Lady Gaga, and many more...

I currently have over 4.6 million views on YouTube and over 30,000 Facebook fans.

Electronics

Most of the electronics projects I work on or am currently working on serve for aesthetic or entertainment purposes. I am currently working on projects with conductive paint and touch sensing to make interactive works of art. A few projects I've worked on are seen below:

Simple Color Detection Circuit (featured on Hack-a-Day!) : A color detection circuit that I designed that uses a photoresistor to sense the color of the object you put over the sensor.

Roly Poly LED (featured on Make's blog!) : Roll a metal ball around a plastic container, make the electrical connections and watch as the LEDs light up in succession!
