G.A.R. men visit schools. Memorial programs arranged for their benefit and a dinner at Glendale.
from Carnegie Union ?? 11 May 1906.
As is their annual custom, members of Capt. Thos. Espy Post, G.A.R., have this week been visiting our public schools. This began Tuesday morning at Shawhan school, East Carnegie, then to Glendale for the afternoon, Carnegie High school Wednesday forenoon, 2nd ward schools in the afternoon, and yesterday afternoon at 1st ward schools.
This beautiful custom has been growing in interest all over the United States, and now wherever a G.A.R. man may be found he visits the public schools about this time of year. Here in Carnegie and vicinity the schools make special arrangements for their coming and a patriotic program is given during a part of their visit. At Glendale the good ladies this year invited them to come there direct from Shawhan school and take dinner. This they did and fourteen of the veterans of the war of '61-65 were served a sumptuous repast in the school building.
The G.A.R. men tell stories of the war, describe battles, etc., and it is an instructive and patriotic lesson to the scholars.
