Zeb Vance Powell (b. 5 February 1884, d. 8 March 1949), son of Billy and Sarah Stamey Powell of Morganton, North Carolina, and a carpenter, married Margaret Alice Poteat (b. 4 September 1882, d. 26 August 1964), daughter of Jake M. (may be John M.?) (b. 1857 Lincoln Co., NC, d. before 1925) and Mary Elizabeth Snipes Poteat (b. 15 March 1859, d. 28 Feb 1939), also from Morganton. (The 1930 census for Burke County, NC, lists Mary Poteat, age 71, as head of household and widow, living with grandson Edward, age 20.)

Probably between 1914 and 1916 the Powells moved from Morganton to Johnson City, and at least some of them lived at the following locations (not necessarily listed in order): Wilson Avenue, Hillcrest Drive, Knob Creek Road, East Market Street, Magnolia Avenue, Old Jonesboro Road, just off Kingsport Highway, Austin Springs Road, 812 East Main Street, East Pine Street, 702 Steel Street, and Mountainview Road.

Zeb Powell's siblings are:

• Isaac Avery (b. ca. 1888, d. ca. 10 June 1953), a policeman in Morganton, North Carolina, married Maude. The family is listed below according to the 1930 census for Burke County, NC. A daughter Myrtle was born deaf and dumb. Mae married Lloyd Morrison.

• Annie had three sons:
  • Sidney Forrest Powell (b. 3 Jul 1906, d. Feb 1977, Morganton, North Carolina), whose father is believed to be Grady (first or last name?). The 1930 Census indicates that Sid Powell (occupation "laborer and tannery"), age 23, married (at age 18) Mildred. Their sons were Billy (age 5) and Norman (age 3).
  • Tom D., a roofing contractor in Richmond, Virginia).
  • Louis Powell, presumably after her marriage to Louis Ketchie of Richmond, Virginia.

Margaret Alice Poteat's siblings are:

• John H. married Flora and lived in Gastonia (Raleigh?), North Carolina.

• Mat married William L. Lingerfelt of Eustis, Va. and Warwick, Virginia, whose son was Stuart.

• William Robert (b. 24 July 1891, d. ca. 1954), a barber, married Lucille, a teacher, nurse and dietitian, and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Beach, and they lived in Morganton.

• Ella Elizabeth (b. 1 November 1878, d. 14 February 1945; buried Bethel United Methodist Cemetery, Burke Co., NC) married Henry T. Mull (b. 1 April 1878, d. 10 June 1956) and their children are:

  • Mrs. Albert Puckett.
  • Mrs. Clyde Orders.
  • McKinney Mull.
  • Walter Mull.

  • Ernest Mull married Mila and lived in Morganton.
  • Conelly Mull was killed in Morganton.

  Zeb and Margaret's children, listed in order of birth and followed by their spouses and children, when known, are as follows:

• Lala Mae (b. 27 May 1902, Morganton, North Carolina, d. 29 Jan 1910 of appendicitis).
  

• Sarah Alma (b. 6 May 1905, Morganton, North Carolina, d. ?) married Hobart Burleson on 26 Mar 1926 at Milligan College near Johnson City, Tennessee, and they divided their time between Hyattsville, Maryland and Coral Gables, Florida, eventually returning to live in Johnson City. Child is J. Warren whose children are Kyle and Keith.

  

Margaret Zeb (b. 7 Aug 1910, d. 15 Oct 1939) married Horace Marks. Margaret Zeb possibly died during pregnancy, although her obituary attributes it to an acute attack of indigestion. There were two daughters:

• Betty ("Doty") married Bill Hale. They lived in Charlotte, North Carolina and their children are:

Dorothy Elizabeth (b. 18 Jun 1913, Morganton, d. Oct 1985) married Millard France (b. 1 Jun 1908, d. Feb 1970), a textile mill employee, and their children are:

1. JoAnn married Bob Fox and their children are Theresa Ann and Gregory Lloyd.
2. Billy Gene married Louise Swartz (d. 3 Feb 1996) and their children are Michael Dennis and Mark Steven. Bill remarried about 1998.
3. Peggy Louise (d. Jul 2003) married William H. (Tom) Coggins (deceased) and their children are Robin Millard, Sheree (who married David Sluss), Timothy, Andrew and Tommy.
4. Nancy Evelyn (b. 28 Nov 1966) married Alvin Bunel Copas and children are Audry Dean (married Randy Dean Barnett, b. 17 Jan 1965) and Stacy Bunel (b. 16 Sep 1974). Nancy later married Ernie Adams.
5. Walter Ernest (deceased) married Lila Mae and their children are Lynn and Scott and Lila's child Lydia from a previous marriage.
6. Dorothy Dianne married Marvin Light (deceased) and their children are Melanie Jo (married Doug Crawford and child is Lauren Ann), and Richard (married Pam and children are Megan and Maci?). Dianne later married Ken Bryson.
7. Terry Lee (Tommy) married Sharon K. Jones and their child is Travis (who married Cassandra Coggins).
8. Michael Millard married Pam ? and children are Cynthia, Susie and Michael (married Debbie ? and their children are Tabatha and Brandon).

Virginia Agnes (b. 26 May 1923) had daughter Deborah who married Holtz on 23 April 1978 in Texas. Deborah later married Pat Costello; she has a son Daniel.
