Hugh J. McManus (1861-1942)
Irish-American Veteran of Spanish-American War

[McManus enlistment certificate] [Hugh and Minnie McManus, early 1930s]

Hugh McManus was born 8 November 1861 in Mullingar, West Meath County, Ireland, of Andrew McManus and Mary Bannon, and he died 3 March 1942 in Johnson City, Tennessee.

In New York City on 6 July 1898 he enlisted as a Private in Company M, 9th Regiment, Infantry, New York, and he was discharged on 15 November 1898. See 9th Regiment, Infantry, New York Volunteers, Spanish American War, Company M.

The 1910 Brooklyn census (Kings, New York, 4th Ward, E.D. #33, page 299) lists Hugh as a fireman [next page is smudged but may read "steam fireman"], age 47, and boarder with Margaret McNamara and her family: husband James (Tax Commissioner for the City), children Joseph A[loysius, later a judge], Mary A[gnes, later Mother Mary Cornelia], Margaret, John G[erard, later an orthopedic surgeon] and Anna L[oretta].

Hugh married Minnie Wilcox White Lewis (pictured above with Hugh in early 1930s) on 11 August 1932 and they lived at 114 West Chestnut Street in Johnson City, Tennessee.

His gravesite is plot K-01-14, Mountain Home Cemetery (now named after Representative Jimmy Quillen) in Johnson City. The following obituary notice presumably is from the Johnson City Press-Chronicle:
