Stress Analysis Design Project

The Task

We were tasked with creating a sheet metal crane that can lift a one pound weight, through an obstacle course. The crane had to weigh less than 20 ounces.

Our Solution

We decided to rely on a traditional truss design for our crane arm. This helped minimize stresses due to bending. We also added L-shaped diagonals to resist the effects of torsion.


Most of the challenges we faced were related to generating enough torque to lift the weight. Throughout our design iterations, we had to consider uncertainties in servo torque output.

Original Features

Our largest concern was to minimize bending, which led to a truss structure with few members on the bottom. Throughout our design, we subtracted members that were not crucial to the stresses it would encounter during testing.
