In late April 2016, group of hackers leaked massive amounts of Qatar National Bank’s data online on Cryptome. The leak included around 1.4 GB of information including customer documents and corporate folders. Customer’s credit cards info and account passwords were part of the leak. Information regarding who the hackers are or how they broke in is unknown. Al-Jazeera journalists and staff were most notably affected by the data leak. QNB didn’t comment about social media speculation. But they claimed that there was no financial damage. Turkish hacker took credit for the attack. Investigations were launched to determine the group behind the attack. The results are undisclosed (as of now).
On October 19, 2013, the Syrian Electronic Army, a group of hacktivists that back the President Bashar Al-Assad, has seized control of the .qa domain name and proceeded to shut down / deface multiple .qa websites including government and private owned webpages. The hacktivists somehow gained access to the Ministry of Information and Communication registrar. The websites were either defaced with the president’s picture and the group’s logo or were shut down entirely. Some time before, The Syrian Electronic Army posted on their official twitter account “Qatar is #down” before updating and shutting down the websites. Fortunately, hours later, all the websites were restored to their original condition.
