A Walking Map:

To help guide you to all that the Phipps CSL has to offer

1. Photovoltaic System

Because available space for renewable solar photovoltaic systems was limited, the net zero energy goal presented a significant challenge for the design team. The building is designed to operate at an estimated 19.5 kBtu/sf/yr, a nearly 80 percent reduction compared to traditionally designed office spaces. Its energy is provided by photovoltaic arrays and a vertical axis wind turbine, together capable of producing up to 140,000 kWh/yr.

2. Rainwater Cisterns

A 1,700-gallon underground cistern stores rainwater for irrigation at the CSL, as well as backup water for the sanitary reuse system. An 80,000-gallon underground modular rainwater harvesting tank captures additional site stormwater runoff. Harvesting some of the estimated 2.7 million gallons of rainwater that will fall on the CSL site annually will significantly reduce the burden on the city’s stormwater management system and the entire Phipps campus’s need to pull potable water.

3. Lagoon

The lagoon, along with the boardwalk and fountain, create a tranquil setting for relaxing and enjoying the surrounding wildlife. Follow meandering paths through one of the world’s greenest manmade landscapes and explore the first project ever to receive Four Stars Sustainable Sites Initiative™ (SITES™) certification.

You asked: "What does net-zero energy status mean?

Answer:

The CSL was designed to achieve net-zero energy status on an annual basis, meaning that, over the course of a year, it is expected to produce more energy than it consumes.
