The rains have made the hills green and the green has sent the deer up to higher points. Now they are a rare sight near the road. The nights of fog and twenty or more large animals around the car are gone until next year. They were getting close to the house. I would look out the window in the morning and see one with large antlers trimming the new growth off a neighbors hedge. At night when I walked back from the Center I could hear them in the field across the road and once even on the hill several feet from me, probably in a panic that I had walked out my door. Their goal seemed to be to eat everything. It was a reason to trim the herb garden and dry things out before they got a chance to eat it as salad. Oddly the only thing that was left in large quantities besides the pickle grass was the wild fennel. It seems like fennel would have the most taste and be eaten first. Apparently they prefer the young and the fresh and have left to find it. |
