Pittsburgh Street Design
In order to transform the streets in Downtown Pittsburgh to enhance the pedestrian experience, an overall ubran design masterplan was introduced consisting of tram tracks and designated pedestrian only streets, and a kit of parts designed to be flexible enough to change according to context. The kit of parts includes pavers, sliding benches, green elements, balconies and an overhead lighting system.
The paving elements used emphasize the dominance of pedestrians in Downtown, slowing traffic as well. The pavers are at the same level as the existing sidewalks in Downtown Pittsburgh creating a pedestrian realm on one datum. The pavers can also accommodate the rails of the tram along the tram's route by inlaying the track between. Sliding benches are also able to be alterable with the help of tracks between the pavers. This movable street furniture allows users to creat different spaces whether it be for gatherings or private moments. Greens, balconies and lights are intended to increase the activity above the ground and create vertical connections.
