Doug Cooper's Pinburgh Animation

Starting in the Spring of 2009, I began working with Carnegie Mellon professor and renown muralist Doug Cooper on a project to bring his murals to life in the form of a short animated film. With Doug's artistic direction, Ryan Woodring, Shawn Cencer, and myself worked for more than a year developing hand-drawn animation, three-dimensional computer models, and film-editing techniques to apply to Doug's drawings as a means of producing a film. After developing a system that we felt confident with moving forward, live actors were chosen over hand-drawn characters, and the film relied heavily on hand-drawn backdrops and computer-modeled vehicles, with some use of computer-modeled neighborhood scenes as well. The film features CMU School of Drama's PigPen Theatre as actors and as the creators of the score—Ryan Melia, Arya Shahi, Ben Ferguson and Dan Weschler. Green screen filming was done at Pittsburgh Filmmakers by Gretchen Neidert and Matthew Day.
