During the Spring of 2009, A group of 12 students under the direction of Professor John Folan embarked upon the design of the Hamnet Homestead Sustainable Living Center in collaboration with the Institute for Ecological Innovation (IEI). The resulting design for a Community Center in Wilkinsburg focused on strategic intervention at Hamnet Homestead Sustainable Living Center. The site currently contains a vacant home adjacent to an urban farm that is operated by GardenDreams. Our design addressed how the vacant property could be renovated and calibrated as a Community Center providing resources for the neighborhood. While the master plan was developed for all phases of the project, a focus was placed on phase one, which included two new structures: a community pavilion and a community greenhouse. These designs were developed and taken through the Construction Document Phase. The Pavilion was prefabricated off-site for eventual implementation on-site, while the greenhouse and full community center build-out are part of the IEI's future plans.
