The H. John Heinz III Archives at Carnegie Mellon University contain the congressional papers of the late Pennsylvanian John Heinz (1938-1991), a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives (1971-1976) and the U.S. Senate (1977-1991). The Heinz House of Representatives Papers (54.9 linear feet) focus on local and regional issues of importance to Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania as well as document Heinz's committee service.

The Heinz Senate Papers (670.6 linear feet) document his work on national issues, such as health care, retirement, international trade and finance, and the environment. Most of the papers are legislative materials generated and collected by the Senator, his legislative assistants and legislative directors. The Senate papers contain committee files, VIP correspondence, regional and statewide grants/projects, press files, campaign material, party/political leadership files, scheduling files, office administration files, voting/attendance records, constituent service records and state office files.

The collection also comprises audio-visual material, memorabilia and photographs documenting Heinz's activities over the course of his representation in Congress.
