Robotics and AI
How do you define AI?
Artificial Intelligence is the simulation of biological/human intelligence using computers.
Can you name at least three different sub-fields of AI?
- Machine learning
- Deep learning (Neural networks)
- Natural Language Processing
AI has been around since about 70 years so far. Why is it booming right now?
70 years ago, AI was only a mathematical concept as computers at the time were not fast enough to perform these types of calculations. Thus, as computational power increased and larger datasets were available due to the proliferation of the internet, more and more people started to apply them to real world problems which made it start to gain traction in the computer science community and the world.
Can you name at least three application sectors where robots are being largely employed? What are the reasons?
- Underwater and Space Exploration: Robots can be used to explore places that cannot be easily reached by human beings, like deep sea crevices and planet exploration.
- Military: Surveillance drones are used to gather intel.
- Manufacturing: Robots perform menial tasks very quickly and without much maintenance, which is perfect for the manufacturing industry.
Can you identify three major challenges for a wheeled autonomous robot performing a 24h surveillance task in a large facility? (e.g., something like Mall of Qatar)
- Object recognition and spatial awareness
- Large battery pack or efficient power usage
- Ensuring the safety of people around it
