Academic TutoringEast End Youth Projects is a student-run tutoring organization at Carnegie Mellon University. It's primary aim is to provide support for the ongoing tutoring and mentoring endeavors of the East End Youth Projects through organized student leadership. East End began in 1993 under the leadership of the Center for University Outreach. Since then it has undergone many changes, the most significant of which was becoming a completely student-run organization in 1997. East End looks for anyone interested in assisting the Pittsburgh community with a specific aim of improving the educational welfare and daily life of a child. It is important to East End that both tutors and students enjoy the learning experience. Tutoring is done in reading, mathematics and other subjects at local elementary and middle schools. Our tutors work to create a supportive, safe situation in which schoolchildren feel comfortable learning. During tutoring students are encouraged to think independently and offered strategies to solve problems on their own. Tutors are asked to volunteer a minimum of two hours per week for at least one semester. This commitment is taken very seriously by the organization. Time slots are available at the beginning of each semester and transportation is provided between Carnegie Mellon and the schools.
