As a researcher, I work on many robots at the Field Robotics Center. My background is in Computer Science, so I write the software that brings these vehicles to life. However it takes people with diverse specialties like mechanical and electrical engineers to actually construct these machines. As well as biologists, geologistics or others to give these robots a purpose. The best part though is testing these vehicles in the field. Simulations and lab demonstrations are important, but there is no substitute for taking a prototype out into the field. Seeing a collection of sensors and motors operate in unison and become a robot is an inspiring event. The other truly rewarding part is sharing this experience with others. | |||
