artist statement

Kurt Rambis was very popular among Lakers fans, and to this day has a cult following.
A four-time World Champion during the "Showtime" era, Kurt was a scrappy relief player
who had great determination (offensive boards? This is your guy), but his very appearance
belies the fact that he was even in the NBA at all. His black glasses were often taped
in the middle--an affectation? Or were they really busted? We may never know. Like many
athletes of his time, Kurt sported a handlebar mustache and a mullet. He looks more like
he should have been on an amateur porn circuit than a basketball court, or perhaps something
even darker than that.

My studio practice encompasses a wide range of ways to make--painting, printmaking, drawing,
collage, sculpture, performance--in order to draw on my varied interests: sports history, feminism,
queer culture, color theory, abstraction, and art history. Adaptation is central to my studio practice,
and I desire to engage materials and concepts in a multitude of ways in order to tap into an expanse
of possibilities for making art.
