Machine Learning

 

Machine learning is giving a computer the function of gaining experience. Computers know only to follow instructions. Machine learning is giving the computer instructions to learn from the data it collects. It means that the computer could improve itself by itself. Programming the computer to do a task is complex enough, but what machine learning is doing is that it teaches the computer how to learn through algorithms which is much more complicated. Machine learning is used in things like image recognition and natural language processing.

 

There are many different kinds of machine learning. One kind is supervised machine learning. This is where the computer can bring about accurate results. This is done through training examples that allow the computer to reach the desired goal. Another type of machine learning is unsupervised machine learning. This is where random data is thrown into the computer for it to analyze and make something out of. Reinforcement learning is another type of learning. The algorithms in this type of machine learning use trial and error in order to decide which course to take or which is the best course to take. The data or results the computer makes out arenŐt really made for human use, but rather for the computerŐs use. The conclusions allow the computer to follow through the next instructions and so achieve a larger goal.

 

The data used in computer learning must be random and significant in size. Random data is very important as to avoid the computer reading into patterns that do not really exist. Accuracy levels are dependent on the size of the data; the more data, the more  accurate the conclusion will be.

 

So who is using Machine Learning? Financial services use Machine Learning to help identify certain accounts. They catch patterns of people who are likely to be in financial problems. They also help catch people with fishy accounts that are likely to belong to people who launder money or commit other financial crimes. Machine Learning is also helpful in the health sector; the technology can help doctors and nurses with diagnosing a patient (or maybe even diagnose the patient itself.) The government can also use machine learning in detecting criminals and their offences. Online shopping features use machine learning to help increase sales through marketing by allowing the online website to monitor the userŐs shopping habit and analyze it to market to each user personally.
