Dr. Berget received both his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in biochemistry from the Department of Biochemsitry in the College of Biological Sciences at the University of Minnesota. He did his postdoctoral training with Jonathan King and David Botstein in the Biology Department at M.I.T. Before arriving at CMU in 1986, Dr. Berget was an Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston.

Dr. Berget is a molecular biologist and teaches a freshman seminar course 03-101, Genes and Diseases, in the first half of the spring semester. He also teaches the Honors section of Modern Biology, 03-121B, in the fall semester. Until 2001, he was the University Director of the Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Sciences and a Board Member of The National Conference of Governors' Schools (NCoGS). Working with the Commonwealth Partnership, Dr. Berget Directed the CWP Biology Initiative for Secondary School Teachers held at CMU between 1990 and 1993.

Dr. Berget established the first WWW site for the Department of Biological Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University in the Fall of 1993 and has been active in delveloping WWW-based Biology Curriculum and using computers and the internet in education.
