Randy Pausch was a Computer Science Professor at Carnegie Mellon University, and according to the description of the YouTube video, he was the creator of the Alice software project, a researcher of human-computer interaction, and co-founder of CMU’s Entertainment Technology Center.
What is he known for? He’s most well known as the author of a famous book named “The Last Lecture,” in which he described his struggles being a professor while fighting against pancreatic cancer in 2008, the importance of achieving your dreams, and living your life to the fullest. One of his famous quotes from the book is “We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand.”
Five points I liked in his talk1. I love how he said that "the overall goal is fun" and that maximizing the use of time is just the means to the end of maximizing having fun. (Much like the importance to get homeworks over with earlier)
2. The quote "Being successful doesn't make you manage your time well, but managing your time well makes you successful" caught my attention because it's very relatable to the environment at CMU-Q. Everyone in CMU-Q is smart and successful in highschool, and I have no doubts about it, but that does not mean that we already know how to manage our time well (and that includes me, but I'm learning as I go).
3. The four-quadrant to do list is quite an interesting technique in prioritizing the importance of a task rather than the due date of said task, which I have not even tried out for my learning even up until now. I might give this a shot at CMU-Q.
4. The fact that he mentioned how you don't FIND times for important things, you MAKE them by choosing not to do something else, which I found very similar to my own motto of "If you can't find a way out, you dig one out for yourself."
5. Making a "fake class" during the long gap between two classes is a technique I find very effective for productivity since you can get things done quicker and earlier while leaving you with more time to ask questions if any uncertanties arose during a certain task.
6. (BONUS) I love how he shows that maintaining a "Work-Life balance" is important, and apparently more effective compared to those who are single and have all the time in the world, because he said people tend to overestimate that all of the time they have will be good for every tasks while overlooking the aspect of life in said timeframe.
