Robotics and AI

How do you define AI?

To me, artificial intelligence is any form man-made technology that has an algorithm that allows it to learn to do its task or do its task better without needing the assistance of humans.

Can you name at least 3 different sub-fields of AI?

Yes, Machine learning, Neural Networking, Deep Learning,Natural Language Processing, Cognitive Computing, and Computer Vision.(The first 3 appeal to me the most)

AI has been around since about 70 years so far. Why is it booming right now?

Artificial Intelligence requires a lot of data to be processed for training models and recently the availablity of this data has increased exponentially. Moreover the computational resources needed to study artificial intelligence have been made available due to many advancements in cloud computing, so now artificial intelligence has become accessible even to smaller companies and institutions.

Can you name at least three application sectors where robots are being largely employed? What are the reasons?

Robots are employed largely in Drilling and fastening, Inspection, and Welding. The main reasons for robots being used here is that these tasks are simple for example when manually drilling, it typically requires 3 steps, while robots can do this operation in a single step. For inspection, accuracy is very important and robots when compared to human would not miss a single detail. Finally Welding needs an extremely high amound of precision that can be achieved much better with robots.

Can you identify three major challenges for a wheeled autonomous robot performing a 24h surveillance task in a large facility?

  1. Making sure not to bump into Important switches or buttons that would result in unwanted consequences such as wasting electricity.
  2. Being able to avoid bumping into the workers in the facility and identifying authorized personel from intruders.
  3. Taking the proper measures after it confirms that there is an intruder in the facility like calling the authorities, locking down the facility, or notifying the owners of the facility.
